Keep Educated & Pass the Knowledge
It’s important to stay on top of reproductive rights news. For me I like to use social media. I have FaceBook, Twitter, Tumblr accounts that I follow and post pro-choice news.
Participate in local organizations activities. There are several events in the Seattle area. Coming up first is the Reproductive Health and Rights Lobby Day. Of course this event doesn’t help with getting pro-choice legislators elected. However, It does remind my current pro-choice leaders that these issues are important and worth fighting for.
Reproductive Health and Rights Lobby Day in Olympia on Monday, January 30, 2012. The event is organized in a joint effort of Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. You get to meet your legislators (or members of their staff) face-to-face and ask them to ensure funding for and access to basic reproductive health care services. It requires that I take a day off of work. But, I believe this is a great opportunity to actually meet my legislators and tell them how I feel about the issues. Last year I went and told my own abortion story as an argument for the Limited Services Pregnancy Center bill. I was nervous about telling my story to strangers, but afterwards it was liberating. I learned a lot about the legislative process and was energized to be part of such a positive team of pro-choice people. I highly recommend going! More info at:
Other local pro-choice activities include: Chocolates for Choice and Repro Health Happy Hour Seattle and organizations that host events throughout the year include: Seattle Clinic Defense, Planned Parenthood PAC, Legal Voice, Planned Parenthood Votes Northwest and NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. Something New that I haven’t done yet!
And, this year. I promise to do some phone banking with Planned Parenthood Votes! http://www.ppvotesnw.net/ This year it’s more important than ever. I need to step up my game. I usually avoid phone banking, but I also need to get out of my comfort zone :) to make a difference.
As always, I will VOTE only for pro-choice candidates!
